Island Hopping  in Greece
Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Crete
 

Day 1: Arrival Athens

 

Arrive Athens, meet & assist and transfer to your hotel with an orientation tour passing the new & old Olympic Stadium before dropping off at the foot of the Acropolis.

Visit the Acropolis with a qualified guide to give you the history of this astounding feat of ancient engineering, before boarding a little train for a ride around Plaka, the historic centre of the city. In the evening enjoy dinner in the Plaka area at the foot of the Acropolis.  This is the ancient quarter of Athens, frequented by Greeks and foreigners alike. Pedestrian malls are lined with shops of all descriptions, tavernas, bars, and restaurants and as night falls the lights go up in the night-clubs, discos and bouzouki halls. Athens is rightly famous for its night life which goes on until the sun rises on another beautiful sunny day.


Day 2
:
Mykonos

Early morning transfer to Piraeus port to board Hi Speed Catamaran to Mykonos, 3 hours away.

Mykonos: the quintessential Greek island of white cubist houses and blue seas, the playground of Europe. Meet and greet by our local rep. The luggage will be taken to the hotel while the group set off on a walk through the winding cobbled streets for an orientation tour past the most interesting features, ending at Little Venice for a drink at a café with views over the sea. Coach transfer to your hotel. 

Rest of the day at leisure: to enjoy the hotel facilities, or swim at one of the famous sandy beaches of Paradise or Super Paradise.

This evening get into the spirit with traditional Greek music and dancing at a Greek Night. 

After dinner explore the bars, pubs, discos, bouzouki bars: all these will entertain those strong enough to carry on into the small hours. OR shop until after midnight in designer boutiques and jewellery emporiums lining the winding alleys of the town Wander in the tiny alleyways of the town and look out for the pelican, the mascot of Mykonos

Day 3: Mykonos

Morning at leisure. Midday coach transfer to the beach for lunch at a traditional Mykonian taverna.  Afterwards board your own caique for a beach cruise along the southern coast, stopping at Super Paradise beach, where the party never stops.  The boat will drop the group at the jetty of Platy Yialos beach. Coach transfer to your hotel.

Day 4: Mykonos

Another day in heaven!  Kick back and enjoy! Swim in the crystal clear waters from sandy beaches or shop in the numerous famous boutiques. Enjoy an authentic Greek salad with delicious bread in a seaside taverna or watch the passing parade over a delicious cappuccino in a pavement café.

Transfer to a restaurant in town for farewell dinner under the palm trees, with views across the bay to Mykonos Town.

Day 5: Santorini

After breakfast, transfer to the port to board Flying Cat catamaran to Santorini, 3 hours away.
Upon arrival, meet and assist and transfer to your hotel in Fira Town. Rest of the day at leisure to stroll around the beautiful little town of Fira, with its distinctive architecture set high on the cliff of the  caldera. Walk to dinner in a Greek restaurant for a welcome dinner.

DAY 6: Islet of Nea Kameni

Day of exploring: board the wooden traditional caique which will head for the islet of Nea Kameni. You will have 1 ½ hours to visit the top of the Volcano. Then you sail to the islet of Palea Kameni, where you can swim to the Hot Springs, the warm sulphur waters that for some are considered to have healing powers (30min). The boat leaves for the islet of Thirassia, where you can have lunch. You can either remains at the little port in a tavern, or climb to the traditional village of Manolas and explore. 2 hours later the boat begins its journey back to the Old Port.

DAY 7: Santorini

Morning at leisure in Santorini.  Explore the many exciting shops in Fira town, take a walk to the Catholic Church to see the carpet weavers. Afternoon tour through some of the other villages on the island, ending at Oia, set on the northernmost point of the caldera cliff, offering spectacular views over the Aegean Sea.  Enjoy a drink while the sun sets before returning to hotel.

DAY 8: Santorini- Crete

Day at leisure; last chance for last minute shopping in Santorini, before boarding the afternoon Flying Cat catamaran to Crete, 2 hours away. Upon arrival, meet and assist and transfer to your hotel in Heraklion Town.

After a short drive to Metohi, a typical Cretan taverna, built like a stone fortress, you will be greeted with friendliness, hospitality and a glass of "raki". A "glendi" follows: a unique experience of enjoyment that only the Cretans and Greeks can show! There are plenty of delicious local specialties and wine to enjoy while being entertained by Cretan dancers in traditional costumes, and of course the opportunity to join in the traditional Greek dancing too!

DAY 9: Crete

A visit to the ruins of Knossos, capital of Minoan Crete, and one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Excavations, carried out by Sir Arthur Evans, a British archaeologist, were started in 1899 and lasted for over 30 years. A visit to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, the second largest one of Greece and one of the most interesting museums worldwide, follows. Finds mostly from the central and eastern part of Crete are exhibited in 20 rooms, in chronological order from the earliest period - before 3000 BC- to the end of the antiquity.
There will   then be some time at leisure for you to wander around Crete’s largest and busiest city.
                                                        

DAY 10 Crete-Athens-South Africa

A one hour drive brings you to Chania, with its colourful old town and picturesque Venetian harbour. The tour starts with a specially designed walking tour around the Old City and Venetian port.  The tour visits the most important sites (the Archaeological Museum, the Cathedral, the ‘leather lane’ and the Market Hall) as well as other exciting, hidden spots off the beaten track, that     reflect the eclectic mix of Venetian and Turkish influences that has given Chania its very unique atmosphere.  There will be time to stroll around for some shopping before dinner at a typical fish taverna on the waterfront, serving local specialities based on the famous Cretan diet.

Transfer back to Heraklion Airport for connecting flight to Athens and then back to Johannesburg.
